His Excellency Mr Esala Ruwan Weerakoon, Secretary General of SAARC visited the SAARC Agriculture Centre (SAC), Dhaka on 06 June 2022. He was accompanied by Mrs Krishanti Weerakoon, spouse of the Secretary General of SAARC and Mr Jamal Uddin Ahmed, Director ARD & SDF, SAARC Secretariat, Kathmandu, Nepal. Dr Baktear Hossain, Director, SAC cordially welcomed H. E Mr Esala Ruwan Weerakoon and the visiting team. To commemorate the visit, an interactive meeting was organized by SAC to present its achievements and challenges in the South Asian region. The visit to SAC by the SAARC Secretary General was significant as many of the on-going successful activities and outputs of the centre were presented and showcased by Dr Baktear Hossain, Director, SAC. Three publications related to Crops, Livestock and Fisheries were released by the SAARC Secretary General. The meeting was attended by Mr. Md. Shamsul Haque, Additional Foreign sectary, (SAARC & BIMSTEC) Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Bangladesh, Dr. S. M. Bokhtiar, Executive Chairman, BARC and SAC Governing Board Member, professionals & staff of SAC, Assistant Secretaries of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the participants of Rural Development Academy of the Livelihood Enhancement project of SAC. The meeting with the SAARC Secretary General and the deliberations by the dignitaries have enthused the participants and the efforts by SAC which evolved as Centre of Excellence in the field of Agriculture were lauded by the SAARC Secretary General. Dr. Md. Ruhul Amin Talukder, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture also joined the programme and interacted with the dignitaries. The delegates of the meeting visited the exhibit stall where several processed products under Livelihoods enhancement project were displayed, interacted with the women entrepreneurs, farmers and the RDA team.
